Volta Catalunya

Alpine Cadence : Supported rides for cyclists in the Alps
Volta Catalunya   May 6 – 14   2023

This exciting trip is full of contrasts. From the magnificent Mediterranean coastal roads to the very highest pass in the Pyrenees. Lots of climbs recently used in the Vuelta Espana and the Tour de France. Based mainly in Catalunya itself with forays into France and Andorra this trip will pack in 7 days of unforgettable riding through very varied landscapes. This trip will start in Girona, home to many pro cyclists and the perfect launchpad for this adventure.

Each day on this trip will between 90-150kms with climbing of 1500-3500m.

The schedule

Saturday May 6

Arrival at either Girona or Barcelona airport. Transfer to central Girona (1h 15 mins from Barcelona and 20 mins from Girona)

Sunday May 7

Girona - Olot. 125kms and 2200m climbing. Our first day of riding takes us deep into the rural heart of Catalunya. A relatively easy and long climb up and beyond St Hilari followed by a stunning descent towards Vic. Our second main climb of the day is the very pretty Collada de Bracons.

Monday May 8

Olot -  La Seu d'Urgell. 135km and 2500m climbing. Quickly into climbing today as we head up the steady climb of the Coll de Canes. Lots of valley riding to follow which leads us into our biggest climb of the day, the Coll de la Creueta, which provides spectacular open views of the region. A swift afternoon as we ride predominantly downhill to our hotel in La Seu.

Tuesday May 9

La Seu d'Urgell - Soldeu. 89kms and 3500m climbing. Not the longest of days but perhaps the toughest! We head into the Principality of Andorra where major climbs await us, all used recently in the Vuelta and the Tour. First comes the tough Collada de la Gallina. We'll then scale another tough climb, Collada de Beixalis. Next comes the Coll d'Ordino offering stunning views across the whole principality. A short descent is followed by a relatively short climb up to the ski station of Soldeu where we'll spend the night.

Wednesday May 10

Soldeu - Puigcerdà. A flexible and potentially much shorter day to give some respite, if needed, halfway through the trip. Our day will begin with the ascent of the Port d'Envalira. Only 9kms long but taking us to the highest paved pass in all the Pyrenees at just over 2400m. We then exit Andorra and ride into France. Our descent to Puigcerdà is punctuated with the very short climb of the Col de Puymorens. Our minimum ride today is 47kms and 900m of climbing. For those looking for more we'll offer a beautiful circuit of the Cerdagne Valley to top up the statistics.

Thursday May 11

Puigcerdà - Camprodon. 135km and 2650m climbing. Our day begins with the long but gentle climb of the Collada de Toses. A superb, long descent follows as we make our way towards Ripoll. We'll head towards Camprodon with an up and back to the ski station of Vallter posing a big challenge to our afternoon legs.

Friday May 12
Camprodon - Roses. 155km and 2400m climbing. Another big day as we head east to the sea. Our biggest climb of the day comes immediately in the shape of the Col d'Ares, perched on the open slopes of the French border. 40kms of glorious riding in France will follow before we cross back into Catalan territory. We'll hit the coast just north of the Cap de Creus peninsular and enjoy some well earned sea views. A visit to the beautiful whitewashed Cadaques before heading to our hotel on the beachfront in Roses.

Saturday May 13

Roses - Tossa de Mar. 120km and 1500m climbing. A stunning last day with the incredibly spectacular coast road to Tossa de Mar providing a wonderful climax to our trip.

Sunday May 14

Transfers to Barcelona and Girona airports.
